The publisher’s latest favourite reads, and his thoughts on each book:

Cover of the novel 'Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell' by Susanna Clarke, featuring white text on a black background and an illustration of a bird.
Fantastically whimsical, a masterclass in storytelling, the characters are compelling and unique. The contrast between the two main characters is a wonderful touch. Currently re-reading.
Cover of 'La Fortune des Rougon' by Emile Zola featuring a historic painting with men in 19th-century attire, holding rifles, and a backdrop of soldiers.
A classic of French literature. Evocative descriptions and full of dry, witty humour. Zola paints a candid view of French society at the time through realistic and deeply flawed characters. Currently reading for the first time.
Book cover of 'The Anarchy' by William Dalrymple, featuring four historical figures in military uniforms from the East India Company era.
A compelling account of the East India Company’s history, and the tragic story of how ruthlessly it dominated the Indian subcontinent. Recently read.

Insightful quote attributed to the late Gene Wolfe. It concisely articulates a concept that becomes immediately obvious as soon as you consider it.
